Before animation can
be done, or before final
illustrations are drawn, a
period of visual exploration
must take place, establishing
the style and feel of the art as
a guide and inspiration for
everyone on the project.
This is what is meant by
concept art. It can include
character design, design
of settings with lighting,
and depictions of actual
scenes from the story or
situation being developed.

In animation production,
art is then generated in the
highly explicit form of
storyboards, a sequence of
panel drawings from the
viewpoint of the camera and
detailing every move and
change that can be
anticipated, including
not only character action
and interaction but also
camera movement, cutting
and other changes.
